Cold Medications: Over-the-counter cold medications are no longer recommended for children under two years of age. Non-pharmacological treatments include nasal saline, humidified air, and elevating the head of the bed. Contact our office for specific advice regarding your child. HPV: Human papilloma virus (HPV) is an organism that is transmitted sexually and can cause cervical cancer in certain individuals. There has been a vaccine developed to prevent HPV infection in girls and women. Please discuss the risks and benefits of this vaccine with your physician at your next office visit. MRSA: Methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a bacterial organism that can cause infections that do not respond to the antibiotics most commonly prescribed to treat skin infections. Flu Shots: The flu shot is recommended for all children age 6 months to 5 years, and certain high risk individuals such as those with asthma or diabetes. Children who share a home with infants under 6 months old should also be vaccinated. Our office administers the flu vaccine from October through spring and offers flu shot clinics in the fall on certain evenings and weekends. Call our office if you are interested in immunizing your child, or would like a reminder card mailed to your home when our flu vaccine is available. Obesity: There has been an increase in the number of overweight children and the issue can begin during the toddler years. In our office, body mass index (BMI) is calculated starting at 2 years of age. Your doctor then interprets this information and discusses the changes necessary to ensure good health.
